An Answer To A Misunderstood Concept About Squash Patch Farms Ministry

I’ve been asked why we use organic methods for growing the food we distribute to those we assist and why we use heirloom seed stock. Those posing these questions usually have a variety of misunderstood concepts that we would be able to grow more food if we used modern methods.

Let me start out my rebuttal to this by first saying that what we are doing is God’s work. Since God only gives His children what is best for them, we also only want to give those we assist the best possible food we can produce.

It’s argued that growing organically is impractical, expensive, and somewhat strange. Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s the way our great grandparents grew, the way food was raised for thousands of years before the invention, wide-spread use, and deceptive advertising of chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilizers and all the GMO seeds on the market today existed. True, it may cost a bit more as you wean your soil their harmful chemical addictions. But in the long run, as you upgrade your soil quality, apply compost you’ve made yourself, and utilize practical, sustainable growing practices, your costs will go down. Going organic is not a compromise. Done right, it yields healthy, more vigorous plants and more bountiful harvests compared to commercially-centered growing. And the peace of mind you’ll gain as you remove known carcinogens, endocrine disrupters, petroleum byproducts, and mysterious and often dangerous inert ingredients from your lawns and landscapes? That is Priceless.

For me, deciding to grow organic was a no-brainer. Conventional gardening revolves around products that kill everything they touch, knocking God’s original creations off-balance and doing harm to the birds and plants that live around us. Then we add a bunch of chemicals to our soil, artificially boosting the growing potential even as we sap it of its ability to regulate moisture and sustain the beneficial insects, worms, and complimentary microbes that bring it to life. It was easy to see that this was not a sustainable system and by continuing to grow this way, those that do were probably doing more harm – much more harm—than good.

We grow the way my parents, grandparents and their parents did and the way God intended man to grow the food we eat. Growing your food the way it was intended to be grown has worked for thousands of years. Man in his self deluding pride and arrogance thinks he knows better than God. It’s not some new phenomena, this problem has been around for a long time. It’s time for those who profess to be believers to take control over what they put in their bodies. After all it is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

One of the ways we endeavor to help those we assist in understanding our concept is through programs we run to help teach people how to grow their own healthy and wholesome food. Our Farm Share Program teaches those in the program not only why growing their own food the Why God intended it to be grown but the How to do it. We show them how to implement Biblical Principles laid down by our Father for having a productive successful garden of their own.

These principles are not difficult to learn. It does take having the knowledge, dedication and hands on practice to perfect the skills needed. That is why our program literally runs an entire growing season. If those in the program desire, we try to get them going with their own gardens shortly into the program. Anyone interested in the Farm Share Program can find more information on our Programs Page.
