Not Everyone Can Be A Farmer But Almost Anyone Can Grow Vegetables

One of the missions and goals of Squash Patch Farms Ministry is to encourage more families to become more self sufficient. Particularly in the area of their food supply. In the not too distant past, the majority of Americans lived in more rural settings and we were a more agriculturally oriented society. A large portion of American families grew much of their own food. It was just second nature for them to do so. They were more self reliant.

America has changes since then and whether you agree with all the changes or not the fact that it has is something we all have to accept. We can however learn from our forefathers and re-establish some of that self reliance and the benefits they enjoyed. There are several reasons for a family to take a more hands on control of what they eat. The best way to do this is by growing as much of what you eat as possible.

I’m not pushing for everyone to become full blown farmers. What I am saying is that almost anyone can have a beneficial impact on the food they consume. The easiest way to do that is by growing some of your own food. Yes it takes time, a little money and some work but the benefits far out weigh the disadvantages. You would be surprised how much food a family can produce in a very small amount of space. The experts say that a 400 SqFt garden (20Ft X 20Ft) can easily produce enough produce to support a family of 4 and at the same time save that family hundreds of dollars on their food bill. I’m not going to go into the fact that what you grow (if you grow the right produce and grow it properly) is going to be healthier for you. It is rather nice to know what is really going into your body. I didn’t mention the exercise value related to gardening either.

From a Biblical perspective, trusting on others to supply your needs is warned against.

Psalm 146:3 ESV - Do not trust in princes, In mortal man, in whom there is no salvation.
Jeremiah 17:5 ESV - Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord.

God gave us the vegetables we eat for food.

Genesis 1:29 ESV - And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.

He also warns us:

Proverbs 20:4 ESV  - If the sluggard does not plow in the autumn; he will seek at harvest and have nothing.
1 Timothy 5:8 ESV  - But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

We know for some folks, their situation and location make it impossible or impractical to have a garden even when they would like one. For those who can however it is well worth doing so. If you live in our area we are here to help you get started.
