Arizona Laws That Make You Wonder

Arizona like most states currently have and have had some rather ridiculous laws on their books. At the time of their inception, most of these laws had a viable reason behind their creation but now are simply ridiculous. Here are a few strange ones that have at one time been actual laws in Arizona.

  • At one time it was prohibited to hunt camels in Arizona. Actually, at one time camels were more common in Arizona than most might think.  The US Calvary actually tried to use them as a replacement for hoses in Arizona.
  • One has to ask themselves why did this law ever exist? - Any misdemeanor committed while wearing a red mask is considered a felony.
  • This one is still on the books. - There is a possible 25 years in prison for cutting down a cactus.
  • Here is another one of those that screams our, Why does this law exist? - Donkeys cannot sleep in bathtubs.
  • Here is one that I have yet to find any history on why it was ever placed on the books. - A class 2 misdemeanor occurs if one places a mark upon a flag which is “likely to provoke physical retaliation”.
  • If you live in Arizona, this law makes plenty of sense. Particularly if you lived here in the late 1800’s or even early 1900’s. - It is unlawful to refuse a person a glass of water.
  • Here is one from Globe Arizona - Cards may not be played in the street with a Native American.
  • If you are in Hayden Arizona, don’t break this law. - If you bother the cottontails or bullfrogs, you will be fined.
  • At one time in Maricopa County Arizona - No more than six girls may live in any house. If you haven’t guessed, this law was designed to curtail prostitution.
  • Mohave County in Arizona has some of the driest land in the state. Even though the Colorado River makes up its Western border, water is real scarce in the area. Even that being said, it’s hard to know how or why this law came into being. - A decree declares that anyone caught stealing soap must wash himself with it until it is all used up. (If you have ever washed with Lye Soap, you can see how this would be a punishment.)
  • If you lived in Nogales Arizona it was an ordinance at one time that prohibited the wearing of suspenders. Don’t ask, I haven’t a clue.
  • If you are riding a horse in Prescott Arizona be careful because - No one is permitted to ride their horse up the stairs of the county court house.
  • Tombstone Arizona, the town too tough to die, has had some other strange laws on their books over the decades but this may be the strangest. - It is illegal for men and women over the age of 18 to have less than one missing tooth visible when smiling.
  • And finally, in Tucson Arizona at one time - Women were not allowed to wear pants.
